Hello everyone and welcome to the first developer diary for School Builder! Today I'll be giving a brief overview of our vision for School Builder.

So what is School Builder ("SCBD")? I will start by saying what it is not. School Builder is not another game in or in the vein of the Discipline Master series. You do not control a character and play through a set storyline. School Builder is at it's heart a school construction and management simulator game.

When you play School Builder you become an invisible, yet all powerful architect and director of a senior prep school. You will start with a vacant plot of land on the outskirts of an up and coming city district. It will be up to you to build your school from the ground up and lead.

You'll decide if your school will be boys only, girls only or co-ed. Likewise you'll have the choice of having an all male, all female or co-ed staff.

You're in charge. As you design and build your school, students will be enrolled and teachers and staff will seek employment. You will set the policies and rules, with a particular emphasis on corporal punishment and discipline. You will also be faced with dilemmas and tough decisions that real school directors all over the world face every day.

If your school is successful you will be able to grow and expand. If it's not, you will need to turn things around or face bankruptcy and closure.

School Builder takes inspiration from original incarnations of SimCity, Roller Coaster Tycoon and similar titles. Like these titles, you will not be manipulating individual characters; rather our goal is to create a game where smaller, disparate systems and decisions end up interacting at the larger scale with an emphasis on corporal punishment and discipline.

Lastly today a few *very early* screenshots. The graphics are mostly placeholders at this time. Our focus for the last week has been coding the underlying bits of scrolling a map, placing/removing rooms, etc. Room placement is now mostly stable, though with a few kinks to work out. Once they are we'll be moving ahead to implementing a time system for the game which will allow us to start simulating students and staff.

Until next time!
